The profile of Isiolo- earmarked for transformation into a resort city -is poised for a major boost as Kenya marks her UNWTO World tourism day celebrations on September 27, 2013 in the county.
The celebrations, under the theme-Tourism and Water-protecting our common future, provide Isiolo the opportunity to showcase its diverse tourism products throughout the week long event.
The celebrations which will kick off on 23rd September and to climax on 27th will include a variety of activities including seminars, workshops and exhibition of tourism products and services by the tourism players in the region.
Cabinet Secretary East African Affairs, Commerce and Tourism Mrs. Phyllis Kandie says Isiolo is poised to reap from the celebration as the country seeks to diversify her tourism attractions.
“Isiolo is the perfect place to celebrate World Tourism Day because it has such great potential that is still unexplored and our focus at this moment is turning potential into actual business. The development of Isiolo also fits nicely with our strategy to diversify our tourism offering,” she said.
The proposed Isiolo city under Vision 2030 will help optimize the rich tourism potential presented by Mt. Kenya, Meru National Park, the Aberdares and Samburu Park among others
The target is to increase bed-nights in the region by at least 50 percent. Already the government has commissioned the construction of Isiolo international airport to handle heavy aircraft and thereby increasing the potential of visitation to the region.
The government early this year commissioned Isiolo airport to handle heavy aircrafts for the anticipated increase of travelers to the region. Small aircraft currently use the Isiolo airstrip a few kilometers away.
